World War III
World War III refers to a hypothetical successor to the Second World War (1939-1945), which is extremely likely and devastating nuclear in nature.
This war is planned and scheduled by the military and civilian, and explored in fiction in many countries. Concepts range of scenarios purely conventional or limited use of nuclear weapons to destroy the planet.
With the development of the arms race before the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, an apocalyptic war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was considered plausible if not probable. The Doomsday Clock has served as a historic symbol of World War III calls from nearby theTruman Doctrine came into force in 1947.
Greatest threats
During the Suez crisis of 1956, Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin sent a note to British Prime Minister Anthony Eden warning that “if this war is not stopped it carries the risk of becoming a third world war. ”
The Cuban missile crisis in 1962 is generally regarded as the historical perspective in which the risk of a third world war was the closest, but there were other events that historians have listed as calls to proximity of the Third World War.
On September 26, 1983, just 25 days after the Soviets shot down civilian airliner Korean Air Lines Flight 007, an early warning station under the command of Soviet Stanislav Petrov falsely detected five incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles. Petrov correctly assessed the situation as a false alarm, and thus did not report his discovery to his superiors. Petrov action probably prevented a third world war, the Soviet policy at that time was the immediate response after the discovery of nuclear ballistic missiles arrived.
During Able Archer 83, a ten-day NATO from the command post November 2, 1983, the Soviets developed their nuclear forces and units of the air set in East Germany and Polandon alert. Many historians believe this exercise has been a call near a starting World War III.
On 12-26 June 1999, Russian forces and NATO had reached an impasse on the Pristina airport in Kosovo. In response, NATO commander Wesley Clark has demanded that the British General Sir Mike Jackson storm the airport with the paratroopers. Jackson reportedly responded: “I’m not going to start World War III for you.”
CIA home, Miles Copeland, wrote in 1989 that in the future, the third world war will begin when “Soviet Russia” dupes of the United States and Israel in a war of self-destructive with Muslim / Arab world.
Difficulties in determining a “world war”
The term “global war” that saw widespread use during a conflict the Second World War. The German biologist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel wrote this shortly after the start of the First World War:
“There is no doubt that the course and character of fear” European War “… will become the first world war in the full sense of the word.
Indianapolis Star September 20, 1914
”
This is the first known example of the term First World War, which previously had been dated to 1913 for first use. The term was used again near the end of the war. English journalist Charles A. Repington (1858-1925) wrote
“[Journal entry, September 10, 1918]: We discussed the name of the law of war. I said that we now called the war, but it could not last. The war against Napoleon wasThe the Great War. To call the war in Germany was too much flattery for the Boche. I suggested the First World War as a shade better title, and finally we agreed to call it The First World War to warn people of the millennium of oblivion that world history was the War history.
The First World War, 1914-1918 (1920)
”
Known as The Great War in the 1920s, she ignored the Napoleonic wars as having the dubious honor of being the first to be called the “Great War”, although, like the Cold War, was a collection of conflicts in the coalition, not a single conflict continues as was the Second World War.
It may take years before another major conflict could probably be recognized as a third world war. serious wars before and after the two world wars, even those who are closely related, are not currently considered part of the larger conflict. These include the Balkan wars from 1912 to 1913 and the Polish-Soviet war from 1919 to 1921, the Japanese invasion and later ofManchuria, China, the Spanish Civil War, the Italian invasion of Ethiopia and Albania, the German annexation of Austria 1938 (Anschluss), and the subsequent occupation ofCzechoslovakia. Therefore, the specific event that a future World War III begins can not be determined retroactively.
Some analysts and historians have suggested the cold war may be identified as the third world war because it was conducted globally by proxy fighters from the United States and later of NATO and the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. In a 2006 interview, U.S. President George W. Bush compared the war against terrorism continues as like “World War III”.
Popular culture
Third World War is also a common theme in popular culture. A vast literature apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic science fiction is postulated describing the implementation and consequences of the Third World War, several notable films were made based on the Third World War, and is the subject of comics various games, songs, magazines, radio programs, newspapers, websites and billboards.
